Chimney caps are devices that sit at the top of the chimney, covering the flue opening as well as the concrete chimney crown. They have “breathable” sides to allow smoke and combustion gases to exit the chimney during a fire in the fireplace, but at the same time, they prevent fiery sparks and embers from sailing out of the flue and landing on the roof.
Most importantly, a proper full-width chimney cap provides the ultimate protection against rainwater infiltrating the chimney flue, where it can cause a variety of problems including chimney liner damage, brick decay, rust and mold growth.

Chase covers or chase tops are found on prefab chimneys (made in a factory rather than built on-site by hand from bricks and mortar). Chimney chase covers protect the entire top of the chimney.
